Yes, we all know it, we get bombarded by it on TV.. wanting to be 'Fair and Lovely" the dark skins urge to be fair skins..
That's the unending legacy of Michale Jackson left for this part of the world..like Jacko,we too want to be like suddha and its the same same story in India,Bangladesh and Nepal (where its big business and part of daily life of not only well to do types but with almost struggling types too..) ...
Even far east as Burma and Laos, its the same story..even in remote and poverty stricken areas of India, some of the most needed commodities are 'fair and lovely' cream...

I highly doubt MJ had much to do with it mate... It's more our Asian inferiority complex
This is more complex than that. Long ago before MJ or even vasco da gama, India had a very diverse population, people ranging from extreme fair to very dark. Maybe the root lies there. And it is interesting to study the caste system in India as well where dhalits are darker than Brahmins.
Again well, some whites do practice sun bathing don't they? Does that mean they are trying to be 'kallas'?
funny things is Unilever had a campaign on "Real beauty" with Dove, and then market Fair and lovely to make people fairer. So far there are white beauty products from Fair and Lovely, Vaseline and ponds! different naems, but the claim's the same. White is better. Hmm...I think a recent ad I saw says something like "Remove dead cells which have melanin"..i'm thinking..hello!? Melanin is supposed to help us beat the sun's rays, specially countries near to the equator. crazy.
Yeh. look at Sigiriya.. The servant girl in dark color and the princess in fair color. Jackson’s legacy form his those Egyptians days...
In the old days, the lower classes who toiled in the fields were sunburnt. The elites spent most of their time in the shade and were lighter. This is one of the main reasons for this issue and Michael Jackson has absolutely nothing to do with it.
In my belief, skin that is neither too dark or too light is the most beautiful. This is why dark people try to lighten their skin and fair people resort to tanning.
